A meeting was held in San Antonio on January 8-9, 2001, exploring ways in which Community Health Worker services can achieve sustainable funding by partnering with major federal-state programs such as Medicaid, CHIP, WIC and Food Stamps.

Participants included federal, state and local officials (click button at left for contact list of participants).

There were initial presentations by Project ENABLE in Baltimore, the City of Ft. Worth Health Department, the Kentucky Homeplace program, Massachusetts state funding of CHWs using tobacco settlement funds, and the Managed Care Education Project of the Community Service Society of New York.  FHF presented a summary of its Medicaid program design, which will be implemented as a State of Texas initiative in 2001 under the State's Promotora Program Development Committee.

The majority of time was spent in "Open Space Technology" session, defining policy recommendations and action plans.  Click here to review these documents.  Send us an email if you'd like to work on these issues.
